Bring on the 12's, Seattle: Let's Go Undercover

What's so special about Seattle football? The Seahawks are the only team with 12 on the field.

The 12th person is, of course, the voice of the fans. In 2013, the fans emitted the “loudest crowd roar at a sports stadium” ever documented - 137.6 decibels, just 12 decibels below eardrum rupture. Woah.

In honor of the latest #UndercoverLyft video with Richard Sherman, let's go undercover with 12 reasons that the Seattle Seahawks and their fans are the best in the land:

  1. #12 is a retired number on the Seahawks as a tribute to the fans.
  2. Seahawks fans are not bandwagon fans - they're True Blue!
  3. Three earthquakes have happened from fans cheering, now known as Dance Quakes.
  4. The sheer volume of the Seahawks' deafening home crowd helped force the visiting New York Giants to commit 11 false start penalties back in 2005.
  5. Since Pete Carroll became coach, the Seahawks have been 1st or 2nd in the league 5 out of 6 times.
  6. The Seahawks logo is inspired by a transformation mask depicting an eagle from the Kwakwaka'wakw tribe.
  7. In 2011, a "cocky little corner" joined the Seahawks: Richard Sherman.
  8. No other NFL team has competed in both an AFC and an NFC championship game.
  9. The Seahawks have played in back-to-back Super Bowls.
  10. Richard Sherman, Deshawn Shead, Kam Chancellor, and Earl Thomas make up the Legion of Boom LOB, which quickly earned a reputation for consistently leading the NFL in numerous defensive categories.
  11. The Seahawks and individual players are committed to volunteering and helping people both locally and nationally.
  12. It turns out Seahawks players are confident on and off the field rating themselves as top notch, 5 star Lyft drivers. Watch below to see what we mean!

Meet Elena: Austin Resident, Creative Powerhouse, Lyft Passenger

Austin native Elena is a filmmaker, actress, comedian, and freelance marketing strategist. She has an award-winning web series under her belt and is currently producing a movie. Like other creative professionals, though, she doesn't always know where she'll get her next paycheck. Luckily for Elena, becoming a driver and passenger with ridesharing app Lyft has solved both of these problems - inspiring her to pursue her passion in the city she loves.

Back to Living the Dream

Last year, Elena and her boyfriend Duncan were living the dream: They'd opened their own production company and were producing the second season of a popular web series. Then, the 9-to-5 company where they both worked suddenly downsized, and they both lost their jobs. “Both of our incomes were gone, just like that, and we were in the middle of filming this huge production. We thought, 'we need money, but what company will hire us when we're working twelve hours a day on a film set?'” Elena thought of Lyft, and she and her boyfriend signed up to be drivers. They spent the next few months filming by day and driving by night. For Elena and Duncan, and the 25% of Lyft drivers who own their own business, the opportunity to drive when it suits them is key. “Lyft's flexible schedule was what got us through filming without running out of money,” Elena says.

A Safe Ride Home

Now that her production work is steady, Elena's put her car in the garage, and primarily uses Lyft as a passenger. “Driving anywhere near downtown Austin is impossible - traffic is awful, and finding a parking spot takes forever - so I'll take Lyft, and the bus when I can, instead,” she says. In fact, 60% of Lyft passengers report using their personal vehicles less because of Lyft, which means fewer cars on the road, and, ultimately, less time-wasting traffic.

Being car-free is especially important, she says, for those happy hour meetings. “In the film world, everything is a networking event, and there are usually drinks involved. Austin's busses don't necessarily run through the night, so knowing I always have Lyft as a safe ride home is really important.”

On May 7, voters will decide the future of ridesharing in Austin.

Commit to vote for Prop 1 to keep safe, reliable transportation in our city.

Improving Transportation Together

“Traffic is a vexing problem in Silicon Valley. Thankfully, our valley is known for producing innovative solutions to vexing problems. I'm so pleased to see the popular Lyft Line service expanded from San Francisco to San Jose. Offering a 60% reduction for those who want to share their ride with others, this creates a real incentive for ridesharing,” - Carl Guardino, CEO of the Silicon Valley Leadership Group

“Silicon Valley's innovation renaissance is a major boon for our economy. However, we are plagued with some of the highest traffic congestion in the state and in the nation. I have long championed a multi-pronged approach to alleviating Bay Area gridlock. I welcome Lyft Line's investment into my district in San Jose as a potential alternative to single-occupancy vehicles and as a means to connect commuters to other transit alternatives that will improve ridership, reduce traffic congestions, and lower emissions.” - Senator Bob Wieckowski (D-CA)

Lyft and NLC4 Partner for Progress

Building meaningful dialogue about important social issues is a natural extension of Lyft's mission to reconnect communities through better transportation.

Lyft is excited to announce a partnership with the New Leaders Council Progressive Action Initiative (NLC4) on its Building America's Innovation Economy Project. Through this collaboration, Lyft will work with the New Leaders Council to produce policy research and engage with NLC's local chapters to pursue a better understanding of the socioeconomic and environmental impacts of ridesharing, and the new innovative economy.

“As someone who is dedicated to fostering new ideas, I am excited that Lyft, a major influence in today's new landscape, is teaming up with the NLC community to craft new ideas for the innovation economy,” said NLC4 Chairman Chris Kelly. “Lyft's leadership is already shown in their projects driving rideshare access in underserved communities and having a nearly 50% female executive team, I am very excited to see what this partnership will come up with next.”

"Lyft is thrilled to be partnering with NLC4 to work with community leaders on smart policies to promote the innovative economy,” said Lyft VP of Government Relations Joseph Okpaku. “As a company that provides safe and inclusive transportation options, as well as economic opportunities for communities across the country, Lyft shares NLC4's goals of using technology to benefit society."

We're proud to call NLC4 an official partner and look forward to the progress we can make together.

An Update on Our International Partnerships

Late last year, we announced partnerships with several of the world's leading ride services, including China's Didi and Southeast Asia's Grab. With more than 15 million people traveling between our continents every year for business, leisure, and education, we came together with a shared goal to  improve the international travel experience for our passengers.

This week, we're kicking off our first public betas. Soon, Didi, Grab, and Lyft passengers traveling abroad will be able to request rides using the apps they already know and love, and be matched with reliable local rides in the country they're visiting. Imagine you're a Didi user traveling to San Francisco – you can step off the plane, tap your Didi app, and get a Lyft from SFO to a taqueria in the Mission or a business meeting in Menlo Park.

Our seamless, behind-the-scenes product integrations mean there's no need to download a new app, create another account, or set up your payment information again. You don't even need to carry the local currency to pay for your rides or explain where you want to go in an unfamiliar language.

Our work with Didi and Grab will expand over the course of the year. This week, Didi passengers traveling to the U.S. will be able to request a ride with Lyft. (Lyft drivers – get ready to greet your new passengers soon!) In the coming weeks, Grab and Lyft passengers traveling between the U.S. and Southeast Asia will be able to ride on partner platforms. Later this year, we'll expand with additional partners in more countries.

Together, we're making it easier and more enjoyable to get a ride, no matter where you are.

Five Days. Six Cities. A Lyft Line First.

From April 11-15, Lyft Line will launch in six of our fastest growing cities: Denver, Philadelphia, San Diego, San Jose, Seattle, and Newark. That's right, six cities in just five days.

Back in 2014, we created Lyft Line to offer affordable everyday transportation. Line connects you with others going the same way, so you split the price - which is always less than original Lyft. Started in San Francisco, Line will soon be available in 15 metropolitan cities. To date, Line makes up for almost 40% of total rides in communities where it's available.

“Lyft's mission is to make our communities better by bringing positive change to transportation – Lyft Line is the heart of that movement,” said Logan Green, Lyft co-founder and CEO. “We are growing and scaling at an incredible pace, which means that we can offer Lyft Line in more markets. Today's news means that we now offer 25% of Americans the option to affordably share their rides through Lyft Line, which means fewer cars on the road across the U.S.”

We're excited to take another step - or in this case six - towards making affordable transportation the standard, not the exception.

Lyft Expands Its Executive Team Adding Two VPs

We are thrilled to welcome two tech industry veterans to Lyft: Vice President of Growth Ran Makavy, and Vice President of Product Design, Henrique Penha. Ran joins Lyft from Facebook and brings incredible experience leveraging data science, deep market analysis, innovation, and hard technology to create products used by hundreds of millions of people. Henrique comes to Lyft from Apple where the focus of his work was making increasingly complex products and services simpler and easier to use.

Ran Makavy

Ran Makavy

In his role at Lyft, Ran will be focused on accelerating the growth of the business as we continue to change the way people think about car ownership and transportation. He was the founder and CEO of Sequoia Capital-backed Snaptu, a platform that allows mobile apps to run on any cell phone, including feature phones, which was acquired by Facebook in 2011. Snaptu - now known as “Facebook for Every Phone” or “Facebook Lite” - has over 200 million monthly active users and 1 billion downloads. Ran also led the team that started Internet.org, an effort to bring affordable internet access to everyone. Prior to founding Snaptu, he worked  on the initial team at Odigo, which was acquired by Comverse, and ran product at Followap, which was acquired by NeuStar. Ran holds a computer science degree and an MBA.

As VP of Product Design, Henrique will focus on the overall product experience. He'll take a design-driven approach to creating and imagining the way we navigate our urban landscapes and communities.

He joins Lyft from Apple's User Interface Team, where he led the development of multiple innovative software experiences across all of Apple's products. Prior to Apple, Henrique created Google's Android Design team and studio in London, leading the design of future components and services of the Android platform. Originally from Brazil, he holds a B.S. in Communication from Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais and a MS in Communication Studies from Boston University.

Ran and Henrique are joining Lyft at a time of unprecedented growth. Already this year Lyft closed on a $1 billion round of funding which included a $500 million investment from General Motors; launched operations, Lyft Line, and airport service in cities across the country; teamed up with California's MTC to launch Lyft Carpool; and together with GM, announced Express Drive making sure everyone who wants to be a Lyft driver has access to a qualifying vehicle.

We are excited to have Ran and Henrique on board as we continue fueling our forward momentum and working toward our vision of reconnecting people and communities through better transportation.
