Weekly Roundup: No More Burning Cash for Uber

Harry here.  Today, Senior RSG contributor John Ince takes a look at a new strategy for Uber in India that could be coming to the US, Instacart's issues with its workers, Uber's new drone marketing tactic and more.

Fare increases, striking for tips, and drones overhead: what's new in this week's roundup? Find out the latest in rideshare news here -

No more burning cash: Ola, Uber raise fares, cut driver incentives [First Post]

Sum and Substance: The consumer internet-based companies' mantra of burning loads of investors' cash to offer discounts to customers may be coming to an end, at least in the taxi aggregation segment. Even as India's e-commerce companies such as Amazon, Flipkart, Snapdeal and others continue to offer hefty discounts through their sellers to gain market share, their counterparts in the country's growing transportation segment seem to be slowly moving towards economies of scale.

Both, the home-grown taxi-hailing app company Ola and the US giant Uber are charting out strategy to boost their revenues and prune costs. The decision is more or less to move away from the earlier stance of offering cheap fares to customers, who usually prefer state-owned buses, local taxis and three-wheelers for transportation purpose.

In a series of steps focussed on improving the revenue metrics, Ola and Uber have started raising fares in several cities, says a report in The Economic Times. Besides this, the companies are also slashing the incentives paid to drivers and stepping up vigilance to curb fraud by drivers, the ET report said. A day before, an Ola executive admitted that predatory pricing is detrimental to the industry, and would react to competition in a way to ensure there is no monopoly in the Indian market.

“In its totality, predatory pricing is detrimental to the industry. In the long run, this will not benefit anyone and it never has in the past. Being an aggregator, we have to react to competition. We live in a competitive market,” Ola Chief Operating Officer Pranay Jivrajka has been quoted as saying in the report. Among the steps taken, Ola has cut drivers' incentives in Delhi by as much as 20-40 percent over a year ago period. Citing an example, the company says it now pays Rs 2,400 as incentive to a driver in Delhi as against Rs 3,000 a year ago, the ET report added.

Ola's arch rival Uber last week raised fares in the Delhi-NCR region for distances over 20 km. This is in addition to the prices being increased in Bengaluru and Hyderabad a year back, mainly to incentivize drivers.

My Take:  Anybody who has taken a serious look at Uber's financials, knows  this move has been coming for some time, starting in India and coming soon to a city near you.  I tell my passengers, “If you like Uber now with these fares, enjoy it while it lasts. It ain't going to last forever.”  I usually get surprised reactions.  Few passengers understand the dynamics of this industry.  They don't know Uber is losing boatloads of investor capital, because they're subsidizing fares and offering driver bonuses.  They just know their ride is ridiculously cheap – and that's just fine with them … for now.

Instacart Cancels Plans To Scrap Tips Amid Threats Of Strikes [Buzzfeed]

Sum and Substance: Instacart is adjusting planned changes to its pay structure for full-service shoppers, following threats of a boycott by the independent contractors who were outraged over the $2 billion grocery delivery startup's plans to replace tips with an optional 10% service fee collected by the company. “After announcing this change we heard from shoppers that they liked most of the changes but wanted to retain the ability for customers to tip online,” Instacart explained in a Friday blog post. “We understand their concern and have decided to continue to accept tips.”

Instacart's move comes just two days ahead of a threatened October 16/17 strike organized around a “Let's get our tips back” call to action. Instacart had maintained that planned changes to its pay rate for independent contractors - which involved raising their base pay rate and replacing tips with an optional 10% “service amount” paid directly to Instacart - were intended to benefit workers by reducing reliance on tips.

But shoppers who did some back-of-the-envelope math following the company's announcement worried that the changes would reduce their overall income. “I get a lot of big tips. That's what I rely on,” said Matt, a shopper in Chicago who planned to boycott Instacart on Sunday and Monday. “I knew it wasn't going to be in my best interests.” Josh, a shopper on the East Coast, agreed. “Right now on an average week I make about $750, and I've made up to $1100 if I really work hard all week and things aren't slow,” he told BuzzFeed News via email. “So, with the changes I'm looking at making between $500 and $700 for the same amount of work.”

My Take:  This development could have longer term implications for Uber – especially if rideshare drivers discover the magic formula that worked here with Instacart.  Does anybody know how this threat of a strike was organized?  So far Uber has simply ignored all attempts to organize drivers and most all efforts have simply vanished with little or no effect on Uber policy.  Did Instacart reverse course here because they're more skittish or more responsive to the clientele?  Or was this a serious threat of boycott that Instacart could not ignore?  Do you have information on this situation? Share in the comments.

Uber used drones to advertise carpooling to drivers stuck in traffic in Mexico [The Verge]

Sum and Substance: A few months ago, drivers stuck in Mexico City traffic were greeted with a strange sight: drones carrying signs advertising UberPool. “The city would be for you, not 5.5 million cars,” one drone's sign read. “Driving by yourself? This is why you can never see the volcanoes,” another read, a reference to the smog that obscures the mountains surrounding the city.

Photos of the unique drone-based advertising strategy first surfaced in an article published last week in Bloomberg about Uber's growth in Latin America. MIT Technology Review characterized the drones as “heckling” drivers, while Jalopnik said they were being “badgered.” Popular Science fretted over whether we could soon see ad-bearing drones here in the US.

A spokesperson for Uber confirmed that drones were used to advertise its carpooling service in Mexico City, but that the company has no plans to replicate the strategy in other markets. In other words, this was a one-time thing.

Or was it? As PopSci points out, Uber would need to obtain a federal waiver, as well as jump through various other bureaucratic hoops, to get permission to fly its ad-drones over drivers stuck on the 405 in Long Beach, or the BQE in New York City. That said, as long as the ad is “securely attached to the small unmanned aircraft” and is flown over human beings ”inside a stationary vehicle that can provide reasonable protection from a falling small unmanned aircraft,” the Federal Aviation Administration says ad-drones would be okay under federal law.

In some ways, what Uber pulled off in Mexico City could be seen as the future of advertising. It's eye-catching, cheaper than a billboard, and clearly results in a lot of earned media for the brand. Which is another way of saying, I'd like to apologize for whatever role this article may play in our dystopian future where coupon-bearing drones dive-bomb unsuspecting consumers. My bad.

My Take: Is it just me or does this seem pretty bizarre to the rest of you too? Yes, we all know Uber is aggressive.  Yes, it's eye catching.  Yes, many drivers will see these drones and impressions will be made.  But what about safety?  What about drivers who are startled by a flying object in front of them?  What about the lasting impressions?  What will drivers think about this two days or two weeks later?  I can't help but think this is just one more of Uber's moves that was not very carefully thought through before the green light was given somewhere up the in Uber corporate offices.

For three hours, Uber let riders pitch their startup to a VC in an UberPool - here's what it was like [Business Insider]

Sum and Substance: Getting in front of some of the most well-known venture capitalists in New York isn't an easy task. But for a few hours on Thursday, Uber gave anyone with an idea the option to hail a VC at the touch of a button.

Called Pool Pitch, the option was available on October 13 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Users could hail a ride with an investor from New York firms like First Round Capital, Lerer Hippeau Ventures, Brooklyn Bridge Capital, and Primary Venture Partners, anywhere in New York's five boroughs. The people with the best ideas received invitations to an event with investors that Thursday night, and three were selected to pitch on stage in front of a panel of VCs. The first-place winner received a $5,000 prize from First Round Capital.

I got to ride along with First Round's Chris Fralic as we picked up entrepreneurs and listened to pitches in Brooklyn's Williamsburg neighborhood. Here's how it went.

Uber had about 30 Uber drivers in SUVs meet at Uber headquarters in Chelsea. I rode along with Chris Fralic, a partner at First Round Capital. Fralic has done Uber Pool Pitch in Philadelphia and said he was excited to see what kind of pitches he was going to get. “You react as they come in and you never really know what you'll get. That's half the fun of it,” Fralic said.

Fralic was actually one of the first people to identify Uber as the next big thing back in 2010. First Round was Uber's first institutional investor, so it's somewhat fitting that Fralic helped organize Uber Pool Pitch in New York. At 11:20, we made our first pick-up. Michael Twersky is the creator of Whyline, an app that helps people avoid waiting in lines at places like hospitals or restaurants. His company has begun to roll out in Argentina and is looking to raise $1 million in funding.

My Take:  It has occurred to me on numerous rides, that the time you have together with a passenger could be put to better use.  That's why I try to engage passengers in conversation and find out what they do – what makes them tick.  On several occasions, I've had wannabe entrepreneurs spin out their entire pitch. Apparently Chris Fralic, of First Round Capital and an early Uber investor, had the same idea.  Imagine if you're one of these drivers, what's your pitch?  I can't help but wonder if at least one of these New York drivers pitched a Juno lookalike?

Readers, what do you think of this week's roundup?

7 Fatal Uber Error Messages Explained

Are you frantically googling to find out why a Uber promo code that is supposed to earn you a free ride isn't working?

Uber error messages can be difficult to understand when based on the error message alone.

You may be getting a general error because of a single digit mistake, or the promo code really isn't working.

Whatever the case, you have come to the right place.

We will help you demystify the common Uber promo code error messages so you can understand where the problem could be.

What Types of Error Messages Could I See?

There are three different Uber promo code error messages you are likely to encounter when you try to redeem free ride credits.

uber-error-messages

The two most common error messages are “Another promotion was already applied” and “Expired Uber promotion codes”.

Another Promotion Was Already Applied

If you encounter the message “Another Promotion Was Already Applied” when trying to enter an Uber promo code, it means that you are trying to redeem free ride credits on an existing account that already received the free first ride.

Riders with existing accounts see this message because Uber allows each account to receive only one Uber promo code from their Refer-a-Friend program.

Simply put, you cannot use an invitation code twice or use a second different code after you are invited by someone else.

Expired Uber Promotion Codes

This error message is pretty self-explanatory.

Uber promotion codes are often valid for a limited time after which they expire.

When you try to enter an expired promo code, this is the error message you get.

Note that once a promo code expires, Uber cannot extend or renew it-it will be gone forever.

You can keep track of your codes' expiration dates right on the app.

Tap on 'Menu' then select 'Promotions' to view the details of all the active promo codes applied to your account.

Referral Codes Have Been Deemed Invalid for This Account

A very uncommon error, when you encounter “Referral Codes Have Been Deemed Invalid for This Account” when you enter an Uber promo code, it could mean that there is a problem with your Uber account.

If you are a new user and you get this error on your first ride even after checking to ensure you entered the code correctly, you may want to review the status of your account if it is active.

The best solution is to send an email to the Uber support team to resolve this error.

Error Message When Creating an Account

Quite a number of Internet users have reported encountering the error message “There was a problem signing up, please try again” when attempting to create a new account.

This could happen for many reasons but the most likely is a temporary server or connection problem.

Some users have had this problem with specific email address domain names.

It is recommended that you try again in a short while but if it persists you can try a different email address or contact Uber support team via email or on Twitter.

Other Error Messages

As with many things within technology, there are errors that come up even with the most routine tasks.

There isn't too much variety when it comes to Uber error messages, but there are a few worth mentioning.

So frustrating!

Error messages are always stressful, but it's not as bad when you know how to fix it.

Take a peek at some other Uber error messages you may encounter in your rideshare adventures.

Error Adding a Payment Method

If you try to enter a prepaid card as a payment method on your Uber account, you will encounter this error message because the company currently does not accept prepaid cards.

You will also see this error or “There Was an Error Processing Your Payment Method” when you enter a credit card CVV number or your billing zip code incorrectly.

Because Uber charges your default payment method in case the ride costs more than available credit, you may not be able to request a ride until you resolve the payment error if none other is active.

The solution to this error depends on the where the problem is.

You may need to contact your bank or financial institution if the method is valid but cannot be added.

Unable to Change Mobile Number or Email

Every Uber account must have associated and verified email address and phone number to request a ride.

If you try to update your phone number or email, you are likely to get this error if the number or address you are trying to change to is already registered by someone else.

In such a case, you will have to contact Uber support team to get your number or email address released.

You may be asked to send your ID and/or a screenshot of the phone number before the change is affected.

How Do Uber Promo Codes Work?

So, how exactly do these uber promo codes work?

Maybe you're looking to score a free ride with Uber or use the credit for a later time.

The best, and possibly the only, chance you have is to redeem an Uber promo code.

how do uber promo codes work exactly?

Tell me more!

Promo codes, also called credit, coupon, referral, or discount codes are special codes that Uber customers can redeem to get free and discounted rides.

These codes are available here exclusively and can be redeemed for up to $15 off the fare price depending on the city.

Using Uber Credit for More Than One Ride

Uber promo codes are one-time use only, meaning that you cannot use a code you have already used in a different ride.

Also…

This also means that if the ride you redeem the promo code on does not use up all the credit, you cannot carry the balance over to your next ride.

Pro Tip:  Most promotions are only available to new customers. However, there still are ways to get additional free ride credit by referring your friends.

Using an Uber Free Ride for More Than One Person

While the free Uber ride promo code cannot be used on multiple rides…

It can be used to offer free rides to multiple passengers on the same ride.

Taking an Uber with friends?

You can use the free ride credit to pay for as many of them as it can, but you can only redeem the code for the one ride only.

Where to Use an Uber Coupon

Most Uber promo codes you will come across are for new customers taking their first Uber ride.

The code only works if the passenger has never requested an Uber ride from their account before.

Good news!

It doesn't matter where you are.

It will work on all Uber services in all areas that Uber operates.

This code can only be used once and only one code can be used per ride.

New User Uber Codes

If you are indeed interested in trying Uber, you're in the right place.

Credit from Referring a Friend

Existing Uber users have only two ways to get free rides through Uber promo codes.

They can get special codes for special promotional events that Uber occasionally publishes.

Or…

They can refer a new user to the service.

If you are an existing user, you can share your own promo code right from the app.

When a someone downloads the app by clicking your referral link or inputs your code, both you and the new member will get a free ride.

Current Referral Bonus

You receive $20 worth of Uber credit code for each new friend that you refer to Uber.

The amount is credited to your account when the new user takes their first ride.

New users can really rake in the savings here.

How?

They also get a complimentary $20 Uber promo credit when they create an account on the Uber app and use an Uber promo code.

Saving the New User Uber Credit

Want to take an Uber but don't want to use your credit yet?

save your new user uber credit for later

No worries.

You can reserve it for later use on the app.

You can toggle Apply Credits ON or OFF to change the payment method before or during the trip.

This is particularly useful if you would rather not waste too much credit on a short ride.

Rides Costing More Than the Credit

If your ride costs more than the Uber credit available on the app, your default payment method will be used to offset the balance.

For instance…

If the ride costs $30 and you only have $20 worth of credit, the default payment method will be charged $10.

The available Uber credit is automatically applied first when the account is charged.

Any balance after the credit is used up is charged to the default payment method.

Changing Your Payment Method

One of the best things about Uber is that you can change how you wish to pay before or during the trip.

This, however, does not apply to promo codes which you MUST enter before requesting a ride.

Simply tap the green credit box to view your current payments profile.

Next…

Select the payment method you would prefer used for the current and next trip.

Also, take note.

The payment method you select will be charged the difference if the available Uber credit cannot cover the entire cost of the trip.

Types of Rides Offered with an Uber Coupon Code

The new user Uber coupon code only works for passengers who have never requested an Uber ride from their account yet.

A new user can use the code in any country or city that Uber operates in.

Types of Uber Cars

Uber offers many different services represented by different types of cars. They include:

They include:

1) UberBLACK (Black car) – This is an executive or 'luxury' service offered by black luxury sedans or SUVs.

These cars charge the highest fare prices but they are commercial registered and insured luxury cars.

2) UberSELECT – A luxury sedan, often a BMW, Mercedes, Audi, or some other high-end vehicle that can seat up to 4 riders.

They feature leather interiors and may be referred to as UberPlus in some markets.

3) UberXL – When you request an UberXL, expect a minivan or SUV that accommodates up to 6 riders.

4) UberX – The least expensive and most popular Uber service, the UberX is typically an everyday car that can seat up to 4 riders.

5) UberTAXI – This requests an everyday taxi with an agreement with Uber.

This means you get a traditional taxi ride but get to pay via the Uber app.

6) UberPOOL – This is a carpool option, driven by an Uber driver.

Basically, you share the ride with someone headed in the same direction and split the cost.

Reimagining Public Transit in San Clemente

Today, we're proud to launch a historic partnership with the City of San Clemente, ensuring uninterrupted transportation access for San Clemente residents in neighborhoods previously served by the 191 and 193 Orange County Transportation Authority bus routes. Our on-demand ridesharing service offers convenience and efficiency in areas where traditional buses have long been a challenge for residents and transit agencies alike.  We are proud to be the City's official ridesharing partner, and to make getting around the city quickly and affordably without a car a reality for residents.

Sample fare breakdown for eligible rides

Using the code SCRIDES, riders can enjoy discounted rides, courtesy of the City of San Clemente and the Orange County Transportation Authority. Save up to $9 on your rides. That means for an $11 ride, you only have to pay $2.

To be eligible, rides must be taken between 6 AM-8 PM, and must be picked up and dropped off along the corridors of the 191 and 193 bus routes. To make sure you're at the right space, look for signs at participating bus stops.

In suburban environments like San Clemente, it is tough to operate fixed route bus service. For years, the City and OCTA, like many areas across the United States, have experienced declining ridership and high operational costs. They wanted to focus resources on improving service in places where buses are most effective, without leaving any residents behind. It was important to provide a transportation option for those who didn't own a car and were dependent on transit. We are honored to help fill that gap.

“[This partnership] not only fills the void of the loss of bus routes by ensuring a seamless transition for bus users, but the service can be provided more efficiently”, says City Councilmember Tim Brown and champion of the SC Rides pilot program.

“The transportation industry is changing and the public is changing the way it commutes. SC Rides is a perfect example of how we are adapting while keeping the number one goal in mind, which is to serve the public and get them where they need to be in a safe and timely fashion”, says San Clemente Councilmember Lori Donchak, who also serves as Chair of the Orange County Transportation Authority Board of Directors.

San Clemente is a southern California beach town not too far from where our co-founder and CEO Logan Green spent his youth. It was here, in a region famous for its freeways and traffic, that the idea of Lyft was born.  We couldn't ask for a more perfect city to partner with as we continue to build a transportation future that curbs congestion, cuts greenhouse gas emissions, and redesigns our streets for people instead of cars.

What Kind of Vehicle Do I Need?

Your car must be a 2004 or newer (unless listed otherwise), have four doors, five seat belts, no body damage, fully functional parts - oh, and good tires.

Other vehicle requirements include:

  • Must be fully functional and safe: A/C, heat, wipers, horn, windows, all lights, seat belts, engine, suspension, steering, brakes, seat controls, and doors (including its locks).
  • Must be free of cracks: windshields, windows, and mirrors.
  • Must meet city/state requirements.
  • Exhaust system must be within state standards, lacking modification and excessive wear.

What if I Don't Have a Car, Can I Still Drive?

Yes, depending on where you live. Lyft and General Motors offer Express Drive, which lets you rent a car in certain cities for as little as $0 - insurance and standard maintenance included - as long as you give a certain number of rides each week. See if Express Drive is available in your area.

How Do I Give a Ride, Anyway?

You accept rides through the Lyft app. Once you accept a ride request, the app will help you navigate to pick up your passenger. Verify their name and destination - then you're ready to roll with the help of directions from Google Maps, Waze, or Apple Maps. When you arrive at your passenger's destination, there are two taps to officially end the ride. After that, you rate your passenger and then await your next ride request.

And, there's no counting money - passengers pay and tip through the app.

I Meet Lyft Driver Requirements, Where Do I Apply?

Complete the driver application here! You'll need to enter some basic info about yourself, then follow the steps to verify that you meet all the Lyft driver requirements.

Next, you'll clean your car - like, really clean your car. Then, schedule a time and place to meet with a mentor, an experienced Lyft driver who can answer your questions. They'll conduct a 19-point vehicle inspection and even go on a practice ride with you.

Background checks are up next (which may take several weeks). Lyft will email you once you're approved.

Ready to drive with Lyft? Get your application rolling.

Lyft DC Volunteers at Martha's Table

Friday, September 16, was Lyft Community Day in all office locations nationwide. We all took some time out to volunteer together and celebrate our growing Lyft community.

Lyft has always been more than just a ride - we want to be a force for good. Lyft DC team members spent the day at Martha's Table. For over three decades, Martha's Table has been creating a safe place for children to eat and read after school. Additionally, Martha's Table provides emergency needs with food and clothing programs, and work to ensure a bright future for children and families through education and family support services.

Overall, Martha's Table has four programs that supports families in DC: Healthy Start, Healthy Eating, Healthy Connections, and Emergency Support Services. Our team volunteered in the Emergency Support Services program. Within the Emergency Support Services program are Martha's Outfitters and Martha's Outlet, clothing programs that provide free, high-quality clothing, shoes, linens, and household furnishings to individuals and families in need. Bringing our community and people together are incredibly important to us. We're glad we were able to take part and look forward to more opportunities!

National Voter Registration Day – Make Your Voice Heard

September 27, 2016 is National Voter Registration Day, a cause that's close to our hearts here at Lyft. We believe that communities are stronger when everyone has a voice, which is why we've decided to partner with TurboVote.

TurboVote is a tool that simplifies the voter registration process in all 50 states, and we're encouraging our drivers and passengers nationwide to use TurboVote and make a difference in the communities where they live and work by voting.

Along with numerous other companies and organizations, such as Airbnb, Starbucks, and Spotify, we're making a long term commitment to increase voter registration and participation nationwide as part of the TurboVote Challenge.

We've seen firsthand the difference this can make. Time and time again, the voices of drivers and passengers has been critical in securing the future of ridesharing in their cities and states.

We hope you'll take this opportunity to register to vote, or update your voter registration, ahead of the upcoming election and make your voice heard on November 8th.

Ride to Work - and Back Home - with Lyft

Don't let getting to work ruin your day. Instead of driving to the office and back home, let Lyft take you there safely and comfortably. Here are four reasons to commute with Lyft.

SIGN UP AND GET A FREE RIDE

No Parking Troubles

Lyft can help you avoid the far-flung parking garage and the expensive reserved spot, whether you drive to the office or a transit station. Commute confidently with Lyft knowing that you'll arrive at work or catch your train on time, without looking like you just ran a 5K from your car. Not only will you skip the stress of finding a parking garage and get dropped off at the door, but you may save a few bucks in parking fees, too.

Lyft Is There When You Need It

The bus leaves every 20 minutes, and the train stops every 10. Or is it the other way around? Instead of riding on their schedule, commute with Lyft on your schedule. When you're ready to go, just open the app, request a ride, and you'll be on your way in minutes.

Options to Ride

Commute alone or with others using Lyft. Lyft Plus offers a bigger ride - enough for you and five co-workers. Save some cash in certain cities and use Lyft Line, where your driver picks up fellow passengers along the way. Or, in cities such as Los Angeles, New York City, Chicago, the Bay Area, and Washington D.C., use Lyft Premier for a more stylish ride in a high-end sedan or SUV. Whatever option you choose, no cash is needed. Just pay for your ride in the Lyft app.

Get Things Done From the Backseat

Driving in rush hour traffic with a grande coffee by your side can be tricky. But if you ride to work with Lyft, you can have your cup o' joe - and drink it, too. You can even get a little you time back after work if you get things done during your commute with Lyft.

Skip the hassle of driving during your commute. Ride to work and home again with Lyft.

SF Celebrates Park(ing) Day

What if our cities had fewer parking lots, and more parks? Last Friday, we took to the streets to find out - by celebrating Park(ing) Day!

Every third Friday in September, people and businesses around the world take part in Park(ing) Day by turning metered parking spots into temporary public spaces. Groups use the their reclaimed space for activities such as meditation, picnics, art, and more.

We reserved parking spaces in the Mission to enjoy with local residents, setting up games, laying out lawn chairs, and spreading the Lyft love with those who stopped by. Check it out!

It doesn't take much to make people smile. A ball pit can do the trick nicely, for example.

A New Ride for THE RIDE Customers

Today, we are proud to start bringing on-demand transportation to customers of THE RIDE, the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority's (MBTA) paratransit service.

Each year THE RIDE provides approximately 1.8 million trips to registered customers. In the past, these trips were required to be booked a day in advance. But with this Lyft partnership, passengers can sign up to enjoy the convenience and flexibility of ridesharing, and request a ride in real-time.

Our partnership with the MBTA reflects an exciting next step in enhancing and expanding THE RIDE's service by reducing passenger wait times and increasing access to jobs, education, errands, and social activities.

Regardless of mobility needs, all customers of THE RIDE can enjoy the same level of access and quality of life. We plan to fully equip our driver platform with wheelchair accessible vehicles, making it easier than ever to request a vehicle with a ramp. At the same time, we're also excited to leverage Concierge, our telephone-based reservation system, as an alternative pathway for people who don't have a smartphone to request a Lyft ride.

“We're excited to partner with Lyft to provide this innovative service to our customers.  We're eager to see how their unique solutions like Concierge and others help both the MBTA and its customers. We look forward to a great partnership,” said MBTA General Manager Brian Shortsleeve.

Lyft's Express Pay Delivers More Than $500 Million to Drivers

At Lyft, we're committed to working harder for our community of drivers and passengers. One of the ways we do so is by offering drivers flexible access to the money they earn with Lyft  - some drivers tell us they want to cash out weekly; others want to cash out daily.

Knowing this, we launched Express Pay nearly a year ago. Within six months of offering the first-of-its-kind feature, we saw 40 percent of driver payouts via Express Pay. Today, that percentage is 50 percent - half of all driver earnings are paid out instantly.

Today we're announcing another exciting milestone: To date, drivers have cashed out more than $500 million through Express Pay. That's more than half a billion dollars!

Drivers are using their instant payouts for all types of purchases, from groceries to vacations. Miss J, a driver from Orlando, told us, “My friends and I were planning a vacation and I needed to pay for my portion of the trip by Monday. I told them - well, let me work this weekend and see what I can do. I drove over the weekend and come Sunday, I pressed that 'Get Paid' button and I made the money I needed to escape to the Bahamas with my friends.”

The success of Express Pay is a result of our partnership with our friends at Stripe. Our drivers rely on Stripe to get paid  - whether instantly or weekly - and we continue to work closely together to create a seamless, positive experience.

We know happy drivers make for happy passengers, and happy passengers make for happy drivers. While Express Pay is one feature that keeps the smiles rolling for drivers, we're devoted to working harder for our community through a number of other ways, like in-app tipping, weekly Power Driver Bonuses, and Express Drive.

*Depends on the drivers' banking institution; most drivers receive instant deposits, some banks' deposit timing will vary; transaction fees apply.

Want to Drive With Lyft? Rent a Ride With Express Drive

While driving with Lyft, Carlos Correa decided he needed a new car. He researched buying or leasing one, but for a variety of reasons, neither option made sense.

“When I sat down with my wife and looked at the cost of a down payment, monthly maintenance, insurance, and depreciation, I just wondered if it was worth it to get into the debt,” Carlos says.

Then he heard about Express Drive, a new program that lets Lyft drivers rent a ride in certain cities for as little as $0 - insurance and standard maintenance included - as long as they give a certain number of rides each week. Not having a long-term car payment appealed to Carlos.

“Express Drive seemed like a great deal,” says Carlos, who has driven with Lyft for more than three years in Chicago. “I'm not locked into a long-term lease. If I want to take a break for a few weeks, I can return the car and get it again later.”

Carlos is far from alone. Express Drive started in Chicago, where 60,000 people applied to drive with Lyft but didn't have a qualifying car. Now, 30 percent of new applicants in Chicago want to be a part of Express Drive.

The exclusive program was so successful that it has expanded to Boston, Washington D.C., Baltimore, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Denver. Learn more in this Express Drive FAQ.

Deon Ashford is an Express Drive participant who joined to keep miles off his everyday car. With about 92,000 miles on that car, he's just short of seeing his 100,000-mile warranty end. With the help of Express Drive, he now takes passengers across Chicago in a 2015 Chevrolet Malibu, eliminating any extra wear and tear on his own car.

“I think it's an amazing program,” says Deon, who works full-time as a fleet service manager for an airline when he's not driving with Lyft. “I definitely drive more with Lyft now that I have the rental. The fact that they cover maintenance and oil changes - that's fantastic.”

Start your Express Drive application here. Or, if you're already an approved driver, visit the Vehicles & Documents tab in your Dashboard. Once approved, you just pick up your Lyft rental and hit the road. Not only can you rent a car from Lyft and General Motors, but you can also give it back when you need to - just open the app and schedule the return.

“It's great because it's a newer vehicle,” says Carlos, who drives a 2015 Chevrolet Equinox. “My tips are higher than average, and I think one reason is the vehicle - passengers feel good about being in a nice car.”

Carlos balances driving with Lyft, being a father, having an internship, and studying as an MBA student. Even with all that going on, he still drives enough most weeks to cover the weekly Express Drive rental cost.

“It's a hodgepodge of when I drive, but that's what's so great about driving with Lyft,” he says. “It's flexible. I can drive when it suits me, with a car that's really roomy and new.”

Rent a ride with Lyft and Express Drive. See how much you can earn and start driving.

Lyft x Budweiser: Meet Your New Designated Driver

We're teaming up with Budweiser to combat drunk driving. From this week through the end of 2016, passengers 21+ can get a free ride (up to $10) on weekends and holidays in select markets*. Because everybody deserves a designated driver, even if you're on a tight budget.

Part of Budweiser's #GiveADamn campaign, the partnership is the first time one of the world's biggest beer brands has joined forces with ridesharing to reduce drunk driving. We're both committed to leading the charge, and to helping make streets safer for every pedestrian, cyclist, and passenger.

“At Lyft, we strive to partner with like-minded, mission-driven brands like Budweiser that are committed to building safer communities and a better world,” says Oliver Hsiang, VP Partnerships at Lyft. “By giving passengers access to free rides each week, we hope everyone will think twice before getting behind the wheel after drinking and look to Lyft as a solution.”

*Coupon codes valid for passengers in markets where Lyft operates in New York, Illinois, Florida, and Colorado, redeemable from 10pm-2am local time on weekend nights.

Introducing Lyft on iOS 10

Exciting news: iOS 10 makes it easier than ever for you to request a Lyft ride (Tim Cook showed us all how during his keynote earlier this week). Now you can get a ride by asking Siri, using your Apple Watch, or even while you're looking up directions in Maps. And that's just the beginning. When you get updates about your Lyft ride, you'll see a photo of your driver and vehicle details with new rich push notifications.

Here's more info on how iOS 10 gives you the ability to enjoy the Lyft experience without opening the app:

  • Get more information about your driver and price estimates - even request a ride through Siri. Going to the airport is as easy as saying “Siri, book me a Lyft to the airport.”
  • Give your phone a rest with Apple Watch. Just tap to do everything from requesting a ride to tipping your driver. Pro-tip: Enable the Lyft complications on your watch face for quick access.
  • Find Lyft ride info the next time you look up a destination using Apple Maps. You can check estimates on fares, times, and request a ride all in one place.

We're committed to give you faster and easier access to better transportation. Our integration with iOS 10 makes this possible. Try it and let us know what you think!

Lyft Las Vegas Turns One

This month is Lyft's one-year anniversary in Las Vegas, and we're saying thank you to drivers and the local community. This Thursday evening at Brooklyn Bowl, we'll be ringing in our first birthday with everyone from drivers to passengers, ambassadors to city partners, and many more.

In year one our city team has:

  • Provided millions of safe rides

  • Enabled thousands of drivers to earn extra income

  • Helped reduce the occurrence of DUIs

  • Built a community of drivers that is nearly ⅓ female

  • Partnered with numerous community groups to help hundreds of people get to kidney dialysis, support the local arts, raise money for charities and more

“Since launching a year ago, Lyft's presence in Vegas has grown tremendously,” says Lyft Las Vegas General Manager, Yacob Girma. “In the last six months alone, we've more than tripled rides, grown our driver base by 2.8 times, and our passenger base by 2.5 times. As we look back at the major milestones accomplished over the last year, we'd like to thank our community of drivers for providing safe, reliable rides to the many tourists and locals that travel through Vegas every day. Looking ahead as we celebrate our official one year anniversary, we're excited to continue this rapid growth and momentum into the future.”

To mark our one year anniversary, we polled our driver community with a simple question, “Why do you Lyft?" Here are some of their stories:

“I Lyft because I'm part of a movement, a movement that says we're in this together for the greater good! I started driving to make ends meet, now I find myself driving more to make friends out of strangers and to help make people's Vegas experience more enjoyable, one ride at a time.”
- David, Lyft driver

“My son was diagnosed with cancer a year-and-a-half ago at 16 years old. As a mother of 5 I'm able to [drive] about 25 hours a week, to pull myself out of the hole little by little.”
- Edie, Lyft driver

“As the father of eight kids, Lyft gives me the opportunity to earn extra money when I have free time.”
- Bradford, Lyft driver

“It supports our vacation budget. Because of Lyft we went to Europe for a month.”
- Krzysztof, Lyft driver

“I grew up in Vegas and was a baker when I started driving with Lyft. Because of my passion, Lyft offered me a full-time job. Now, I'm a Senior Manager. I love being part of the drivers' journey and watching our community grow into a unique and exhilarating market.”
- Josh, Lyft Las Vegas' first employee

To celebrate, we're offering up to $50 in free ride credit to try Lyft for the first time. New passengers redeem here:

The Story Begins: Lyft First-Ride Adventures

Before you get in the car for your first Lyft ride, you'll want to know what to expect. So, we asked passengers about their first trips with Lyft. Here's what they said:

My Lyft Ride Cured My Midnight Munchies

We left a bar in Manhattan to go to one across town. Then, we realized no one had subway cards - there were six of us - and a taxi at this time of night wasn't an option.

A miracle happened once we remembered Lyft Plus.

I downloaded the app and easily requested a ride. I soon got a call from the driver, introducing himself and letting me know he was only a couple of minutes away.

When he arrived, guess what was in the backseat? Doughnuts! He let us know that he loves to make his passengers comfortable, and he was so nice that he didn't even care when we pretty much ate them all.

To make it even better, he had a full pack of water just for bar-hoppers like us. If that's not a 5-star ride, I don't know what is.

- Allison Ganes

When Lyft Was My Phone's Emergency Contact

I was traveling with a coworker in New York City. We finally got outside the airport, and taxis were abundant - but so were the people getting in them. I noticed a Lyft sticker on one car and thought we'd try it out since the line for a taxi seemed never-ending.

I downloaded the app, entered my corporate card, and requested a ride that showed up in like three minutes. We got in, rode to our destination, got out, and kept walking - until I realized I didn't have my phone.

Panic ensued.

I anxiously rummaged through my bags only to find out that I was, in fact, one phone short. My coworker downloaded the app, I logged into my Lyft account, and together we located a “find lost item” link.

I quickly pressed it, answered a couple of questions, and submitted my request. We soon got a call from the driver saying he found my phone and was heading back. A few minutes later there he was: window down, smiling, and holding out my phone for me to grab. After I excessively thanked him for saving the day, I was pleased that I could tip the driver in the app for bringing my neglected phone back to me.

- Laura Ayala

Let Lyft Show You Around Town

I tend to stick to what I know and am hesitant to try something new. But I recently talked with someone who recommended Lyft, and when I saw that it was available while on vacation in Savannah, Georgia, I gave it a try.

Requesting the ride was super simple. The driver's face and car were listed in the app - no mistaking a random person for your driver here! The ride was more of an experience than I expected. Our driver was a local who knew his way around, and he asked us what our plans were for the weekend. We didn't know where to start, so our driver recommended different bars with different atmospheres depending on how we were feeling - one had a really cool rooftop bar with an incredible view of the city. He definitely wanted to make sure we had a good time.

We used Lyft again and again. Our Lyft drivers made us feel super welcome in their city. They were knowledgeable about Savannah's history and what restaurants and bars had just opened up, and it really felt like they wanted us to have a great visit. I wished that we could've stayed longer to follow more of their awesome suggestions. Maybe next time, and definitely with Lyft!

- Ashley Durbin

Riding in Someone Else's Shoes

My first Lyft ride was from a food festival in the Financial District to my apartment in Queens. I was hanging out, eating pizza by the East River and complaining to a friend about taking the subway home. He told me that if I hadn't used Lyft and I signed up, I would get free ride credit, especially if he referred me. And if he referred me, he would get a free ride! So, I decided to do it. My driver showed up quickly in a car with bumblebee seat covers, and I was home within 20 minutes.

Since then I have taken many, many rides with Lyft. On a recent ride, my driver told me about moving to NYC from Honduras when he was 13, and all of the interesting jobs he had since finishing college. His goal is to start an education nonprofit to benefit kids, and he's using his time as a Lyft driver to think through the logistics.

Since that first ride, one of the most interesting parts of using Lyft is the chance to get a glimpse into someone else's life. Whether the drivers are working out the details of a nonprofit or using the family car to make some extra money, there's usually an interesting story to be heard.

- Cathie Burns

Gracias, Lyft!

It was Fourth of July weekend in West Palm Beach, and Lyft was offering ride credit for new passengers. My brother-in-law was in town, so my husband and I decided to save some cash and try it out.

The first driver who picked us up also spoke Spanish - and, my husband is fluent. They talked for a while, and we all somehow ended up trying to teach one another words in English and Spanish. Even though it was just a 10-minute ride, it was so much fun speaking in Spanglish.

On the way home that night, our Lyft driver motioned to us that he was deaf. I was happy to find out that the Lyft driver community is so inclusive and welcoming.

From my middle-school American Sign Language classes, I could only remember “airplane” and “thank you.” Clearly, “airplane” had absolutely no use in this context, but “thank you” certainly did. Our driver appreciated that we tried to communicate with him when I thanked him for getting us home safely.

Berkeley, Meet Your Game Day Ride

Gear up, U.C. Berkeley. School's in session! And while you may be struggling to wake up for those 8AM lectures, the start of school also means one exciting thing: football season is back. As this year's official rideshare partner for Cal football, we're ready to help you enjoy your game day experience safely and responsibly.

There's nothing worse than trying to find parking during a sporting event (inevitably cutting into pregame festivities), except maybe fighting with the rowdy crowd on your way out. With a simple Lyft ride request, you can skip the before and after hassles, grab a drink, and enjoy the game.

Passenger Tip: Keep an eye out for signs directing you to the dedicated "Lyft Lane" outside of California Memorial Stadium.

Fun fact: Berkeley's mascot, Oski the Bear, made his debut on September 27th, 1941 during the season opener. Also a fun fact: Lyft will make their debut at the Cal Pre-game Fan Fest on September 17, 2016. Stop by our bright pink tent three hours before kick-off and take a chance on our prize wheel for awesome Lyft swag. We'll see you there!

5 Things to Do in DC this Labor Day Weekend

It's Labor Day weekend and you weren't able to make it to the beach. Don't worry, there's plenty to do in and around DC this holiday weekend. We've put together five things to do in DC just in case you've procrastinated:

Head to the Ballpark
Monday, September 5, the Washington Nationals go to battle with the Atlanta Braves at 4:00 PM. The Nats are still running strong in first place in the NL East, with the Braves sitting in fifth. Grab Washington National Tickets today.

Hit the Georgetown Waterfront
Take in the sights, sounds, and smells of Georgetown this holiday weekend. One thing that is a must-visit is the Key Bridge Boathouse. At the Boathouse, you can rent kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards. In addition to touring the monuments, try paddle yoga on a standup paddleboard.

Segway Tours
If the water isn't for you, then give a Segway a try! City Segway Tours is one of the most exciting ways to travel around the city. It's inexpensive, fun, and totally unique.

Drink and Eat on a Rooftop
Enjoy the DC Summer heat before it's fall and pumpkin spice lattes are flooding your newsfeed. There's a plethora of rooftop bars, pools, and restaurants to take in, but we've already done the hard work and selected five of our favorites: Marvin, Donovan, Brixton, Embassy Row Hotel, and Jack Rose.

Enjoy the Labor Day Weekend Music Festival
The festival is presented by the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities. It takes place Friday through Sunday at the Historic Lincoln Theatre. More than 10 artists will be present. And did we mention it's completely free? RSVP here.

The 5 Lyft Rides You'll Take in College

Whether you can't wait to get back to school or you're holding on tight to the last days of summer, we're here to make it all a little easier. Here are the five types of Lyft rides you'll most definitely take on campus this year.

1. The Walmart ride. College can be stressful. Trying to ride the bus with an armful of plastic storage drawers will make it exponentially more so. Trust us.

2. The rainy day ride. Snow. Heat waves. Rain. You can't predict the weather, but you can warm up, cool down, or stay dry in a Lyft ride. Nobody likes a soggy lab partner.

3. The snooze button ride. Unfortunately, 8:00 AM lectures are a thing. Thankfully, last-minute, door-to-door Lyft rides are too. Enjoy the extra few minutes of z's and still make it to class on time.

4. The after-party ride. Coming home from a night out? Be safe and let us do the driving. Not to mention sometimes heels - or that fabulous bedsheet toga you threw together in fifteen minutes - are just not made for walking.

5. The munchies ride. It's midnight and you're finally leaving the library. Your stomach growls. Two words: drive. Thru.

Wishing you a happy back-to-school season!

6 Reasons to Make Lyft Your Campus Shuttle This Semester

It might be time to stop begging your parents for a car on campus. Between parking fees and tickets that add up faster than you think, it gets expensive fast. Plus, you'll miss out on walks and bike rides where you'll run into friends.

DOWNLOAD TO GET A FREE RIDE

But sometimes you just have to get off campus, and walking or riding your bike won't always work. That's when you can skip the campus shuttle and rely on a Lyft ride to get you where you need to go.

Here are six reasons to request a Lyft ride while you're in college.

1. Late-Night Rides

Whether you're at a party with friends or in the library putting the finishing touches on your paper, it can get late - fast. And walking anywhere alone at night can be unsettling, especially with a backpack full of prized belongings. (That thesis is just as valuable as the laptop where it's saved.) Instead, request a Lyft ride at the end of a long day. It's a reliable way to get home safely after a late-night study session or a night of drinking.

2. Rides to the Game

You love your school's athletic teams, but wish the stadium wasn't so far away. And even if you have a car to drive to the game, parking can be a nightmare. Waiting around for the campus shuttle just won't do, either.

Request a Lyft ride to pick up your crew, and then have your driver drop you off at the game. Who knows, you may even turn your Lyft driver into a fan on the ride there!

3. Off-Campus Grocery Shopping

Saving money by opting out of campus dining is possible, even without a car. Request a Lyft ride to shop and run errands around town. You'll be thankful to haul your groceries in a car rather than carrying them home. Here's a pro-tip: Head to a grocery store that's in a big shopping center. That way, you can walk to other stores - say, the pharmacy or cute boutique - that are close by to make the most of each trip. You can also use the Lyft app to split the price with your roommate when you head out together.

4. Weekend-Warrior Activities

Sometimes you just want to take a break from school and find cool places off campus. Head to the park or the beach, or simply find something fun to do in a nearby city - and let Lyft take you there. When you're done exploring, request a Lyft ride to take you back to campus.

5. Airport Rides

Come holiday time, everyone will be scrambling to finish finals and land a ride to the airport. Skip sweet talking friends with cars or paying for an expensive taxi, and request a Lyft ride to take you to the airport.

6. Rainy Days

So long drenched backpacks, jeans, and rain boots. When it's pouring outside and you need to get to class, request a Lyft ride to scoop you up and get you around campus - because, unfortunately, rain isn't an excuse to skip your lecture.

Need a ride around or off campus? Skip the campus shuttle and request a Lyft ride instead.

TPAC's Focus On Education

The nonprofit organization Tennessee Performing Arts Center provides a year-round lineup of incredible theatrical performances. This year they're producing Broadway-acclaimed hits like Evita and RENT. These performances are an inspiration for the arts community in Nashville and TPAC has been fundamental in these opportunities.

For over 30 years, TPAC has helped provide over 1.8 million students and educators with curriculum-based arts education programs in Nashville. These programs are available for children and adults and through TPAC Education's five programs: ArtSmart, Disney Musicals in Schools, Humanities Outreach in Tennessee, TPAC InsideOut, and Wolf Trap Early Learning through the Arts. Children and educators have opportunities like seeing performances and receiving specially trained teaching artists in their classrooms.

By promoting the value of theater education into schools, TPAC fosters a love of the arts in future generations and makes a lasting impact on the quality of their lives and our community.

This month, if you ride with Lyft using the code TPAC16 we will donate the cost of the ride to their programs!

National Dog Day

We love our dogs so much here at Lyft that we can't even bear to leave them at home. Employees are encouraged to bring their pups to work, so these dogs become staples of the office and a part of our Lyft fam. We even have an Instagram account to show off how darn cute they are. To celebrate National Dog Day (yes, it's a thing!), we want to introduce a few of our fluffy Lyft friends.

"It's me, Steven! I travel, code and love food."

"I'm Pixel the Maltipoo. I like long hikes, Chinese food, and face licking."

And here's a dog in a backpack, just for good measure.
