Lyft's Guide to Outside Lands 2016

From August 5th - 7th, Outside Lands will be returning to Golden Gate Park for the ninth year. Which means thousands of boho-dressed music lovers will be swarming the streets of San Francisco. Not sure how to survive the weekend? We've got you covered.

Plan Ahead

Packing list: Be knowledgable about what's allowed on festival grounds. You can bring in an empty camelback or container, blankets, and binoculars. You can't bring in fireworks, lawn furniture, and selfie sticks (heartbreaking, we know). You can find the full list of what's allowed inside here

Layers, layers, layers: You've heard it once, but we'll say it again. Layer up! Even on the sunniest days, the San Francisco breeze takes no prisoners.

Game plan: Lastly, go in with a game plan. J Cole or Duran Druan? Miguel or Kehlani? Feel free to add this moment to your list of "big life choices." You can also make a custom schedule each day so you don't miss any of your favorite artists.

At The Festival

Trade in your cash for a wristband: Avoid the stress of managing cash and get a festival wristband. Outside Lands is selling high tech wristbands that work the same way as a pre-paid card. Simply add credit to your account and use it at the festival.

Recharge: It's going to be a long weekend and you'll be constantly on the move. Don't forget to take a moment to find charging stations for your phone, as well as water stations to refill your bottle and take a quick break.

Don't limit yourself to music: We get it, it's a music festival. But one of the best parts about Outside Lands is the Bay Area cuisine and local art. So check out the vendors, sip on some wine, and appreciate the art.

Post-Festival Shows

Shoutout to #TeamNoSleep. If you're not ready to call it a night there are more artists to see at Outside Lands Night Shows. Check out the full lineup here.

Avoid the Crowd

Not a fan of crowds? Skip out on fighting your way through festival goers and enjoy Outside Lands from the comfort of your couch via live stream. Or if you want to experience the music in person (minus the thousands of people) you can listen to the performers from comfortable spots in Golden Gate Park. Marx Meadow Path and Bison Field are notable areas.

As the official ride share sponsor of Outside Lands, Lyft will be there to get you to and from the festival. So however you plan on spending your weekend, be sure to do it responsibly and ride with Lyft. Enjoy the festival and we'll see you there!

Uber Fare Estimate & Price Rates 2016 Guide

Are you looking for a way to calculate your ride with an Uber fare estimate?

Uber is leading the pack for ridesharing services, and there are a few very good reasons for this.

Uber was the first on the scene in the ridesharing niche, and that has given the company a huge advantage.

There are resources to help Uber drivers and passengers get acquainted with the service.

uber-fare-estimate

The safety measures embedded in the service also contributes to its popularity and mounting success.

Uber has carved out a dominant slice of the ridesharing pie.

Below are a few resources passengers and drivers alike can take advantage of to get the most out of the leading rideshare service.

Uber has been taking the taxi cab companies by storm with their innovative take on technology and transportation.

Uber Service Options

Uber is considered one resource, but it comes in a few colors or versions.

There is the main service, which everything branches from.

The main service is a car and the standard rate.

There are four additional variations in particular that define the Uber experience.

UberX

UberX is a low-cost alternative to the classic Uber experience.

Passengers can expect a lower rate in exchange for their expected continual patronage.

There are no contracts involved, but UberX is encouraged as a service for repeat customers.

As for drivers, the vehicle must be new (the Terms of Service detail 2005 or newer, but it varies by city).

The service allows up to four passengers.

In some cities, UberX is the same as the classic default Uber service.

Specifically, the city does not have a designation separating the classic service from uberX.

UberSUV

UberSUV has all the standards and expectations of the other Uber variations, including the car's age.

The difference is, of course, the UberSUV service allows more passengers and includes more room in the SUV.

UberBLACK

UberBLACK is a business professional service.

Passengers can expect superior service and professionalism.

The service will provide a luxury vehicle, and drivers are held to a specific dress code.

UberPOP

UberPOP is the European version of UberX, and it carries the same features of its U.S. counterpart.

There are few other variations that are less used.

Uber is clearly dissecting their overall service to fulfill different needs, unlike other competing rideshare brands.

It is a worthwhile strategy that is perpetuating Uber's growth.

Customers are Getting an Uber Fare Estimate

Uber passengers are not left to guess the cost of their ride.

The Uber Fare Estimator is a popular resource for receiving an Uber Quote.

Users simply input their pick-up location and destination.

The Uber Rates will be provided based on the current data.

It looks at surges, which are times where high-demand increases the price.

There are surge tiers, usually from “times two” to “times four” that multiply the base rate.

A traditional ride will be about $1 per two miles.

Passengers can benefit from an Uber Estimate beforehand to determine the amount of a tip, if necessary.

They can also assess their weekly travel expenses while on vacation or assess the cost of using Uber for an extended period of time.

The best thing yet is that the prices have recently been cut.

Drivers are getting paid less per ride, but that is a blessing in disguise.

Passengers pay less.

Passengers request more rides.

Uber is growing fast, and they are knocking on the front doors of cities that previously denied them access.

Chicago Driver of the Month

Every day, the Lyft Chicago team hears countless stories of drivers who go the extra mile to make the Lyft community great. This month, we're highlighting Joseph S. whose people skills make him a passenger favorite. A recent rider said "he was super nice and helped us to find out what activities to do in Chicago!" We sat down with Joseph to hear his Lyft story.

"I sold cars for about 4.5 years, I loved it, but it was a stressful environment. I was approved to drive with Lyft in January. I just started driving full-time 3 weeks ago. With the flexibility Lyft offers, this helps me have a better work life balance. I am now able to do more things I want to do, enjoy time with family, and enjoy life. I feel like Lyft cares about their passengers and their drivers. It's a cohesive environment and we all work well together."

Skip the Parking Garage and Ride With Lyft

It's Friday night, and you just got paid. It's time to spend some of that cash on food, drinks, and maybe more food - post-drinks. The last thing you want is the hassle of parking your car when you go out.

Instead, take a Lyft ride and kick off your night with less to worry about. Here are some reasons to bail on the parking garage and ride with Lyft:

Look Less, Play More

Parking spots can be harder to find than your soul mate, as if everyone thought it was a good idea to drive downtown at the same time. When you ride with Lyft, there's no need to waste time searching for a place to squeeze in your car. Your wasted time now becomes more good times.

Travel Door to Door

Sky-high stilettos can make it difficult to walk around town. Instead of searching for a parking spot and walking what seems like miles, let your Lyft driver drop you off right where you need to go. That way, you only need to worry about navigating to the dance floor.

Avoid Designating a Driver

Rather than forcing a friend be the responsible driver - or worse, paying the price of drinking and driving - your Lyft driver can safely take you home once the night ends. One (or three) more margaritas? Yes, please.

Forget Forgetting

Did you park on North 5th or South 5th? Or maybe it was 15th? If you took a Lyft ride, you don't need to find your car at the end of the night. Just open the app, request a ride, and get picked up in minutes.

Avoid going on a parking garage safari. Instead, let Lyft give you a ride. Sign up for the app.

Pride Month Recap

We celebrated Pride this June in ten of our largest cities, which meant thousands of Pride flags, hundreds of Lyft Pride t-shirts, dozens of enormous parade balloons, and one multicolored Lyft car. We left each event feeling proud to support such a great cause. We also asked the Lyft community, "What does Pride mean to you?" and saw some incredible, inspiring responses.

#BetterTogether Contest

Of the hundreds of stories submitted, four really stood out to us. Here are the winners of the #BetterTogether social contest.

“What's better than having one mama? Having TWO! These women are the definition of kind, resilient and beat all the odds. They created a family when people told them they couldn't. They raised their girls and their grandkids to understand the struggle but join the fight for peace. We are #BetterTogether. We are a powerful force of love to be reckoned with!” - Passenger Kari in Indiana

Lyft And LinkedIn Team Up to Help Drivers Advance Their Careers

We know that people who choose to drive with Lyft come from a wide range of backgrounds.

Some are students or from the creative arts and others are making extra income in between jobs. Around a quarter of drivers own a separate small business and 86 percent are fully employed or seeking full time employment in the career of their choice.

While driving with Lyft, we want to ensure that drivers are able to move forward on the path of their choice. That's why we're excited to share that we're teaming up with LinkedIn - the world's largest professional network with a vision to create economic opportunity for every member of the global workforce - to roll out a pilot program in Denver that will offer LinkedIn resources to drivers who want to learn additional skills.

Drivers in the Denver pilot program have been invited to a special event where they'll be paired with LinkedIn experts who can help them build their profiles and professional brands, strengthen their networks, and explore training and career opportunities.

"In March, we introduced a new product called Training Finder to help Coloradans acquire the skills they need to qualify for the jobs they want," said LinkedIn Senior Manager of City and State Programs Alison Dorsey. "We often hear from Lyft drivers who are driving while exploring training programs and additional jobs, so we're thrilled to work with Lyft to help more drivers take advantage of our training and jobs resources."

“Everyone has different reasons for driving with Lyft and different goals for the future,” said Lyft Senior Director of Public Policy Michael Masserman. “The diversity of drivers is one of the things that makes Lyft great, and it's what inspires us to continue creating resources that give the Lyft community flexibility and paths to success.”

LinkedIn and Lyft are exploring rolling the program out to more communities across America in the months to come.

The LinkedIn pilot adds to Lyft's growing lineup of driver resources, which include healthcare, insurance, retirement, communications, and tax services. We're excited to keep up the momentum and demonstrate that #ValuesMatter.

Express Drive Expands Footprint to California and Colorado

This summer, Lyft and General Motors' Express Drive will launch in San Francisco, followed by Denver and Los Angeles this fall. This flexible, all-inclusive rental program gives Lyft drivers the opportunity to access cars for as little as $0 whenever they need them.

In San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Denver combined, over 130,000 people who applied to become Lyft drivers - but didn't have qualifying cars - will now have the opportunity to drive on the platform.

What's even more exciting is that Express Drive's California members will have access to vehicles from the largest pure electric vehicle fleets, including the 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV and the extended-range electric 2016 Chevrolet Volt.

This Express Drive expansion follows successful launches in Chicago, Boston, Washington D.C., and Baltimore. Since March, the Lyft-exclusive program has been a big hit:

  • 30% of new Lyft driver applicants in Chicago have requested an Express Drive vehicle

  • Lyft drivers with Express Drive vehicles have earned $2 million, and counting

Along with the tips and same-day payouts, Express Drive is another way Lyft treats drivers better, giving them access to flexible earning opportunities without the hassle of full car ownership or expensive lease deals.

Carlos, a Lyft driver in Chicago, has told us how much he loves the Express Drive program: “When I found out about Express Drive, it made total sense for me as a low-cost, flexible option. As a full-time MBA student, I need to be able to earn an income for my family. Since Express Drive is a rental program, as opposed to a long-term lease, it truly allows me the flexibility to be able to return the car on short notice if I want to take off time for vacation or to study for finals.”

For active Lyft drivers who meet a certain ride count each week, there'll be no weekly rental cost. In short: The more you drive, the less you pay. In addition to affordability, Express Drive includes insurance and standard maintenance, and offers flexible terms for drivers. To learn more or start driving, visit lyft.com/expressdrive or read our press release.
