Meet Lyft Carpool: A New Way to Commute

Nowadays, getting to work is work in itself. Congestion has become an inescapable part of the American commute, and rush hour is getting worse nationwide.* Yet 80% of Americans still drive to work alone because it's their best option.** Until today.

Introducing Lyft Carpool, a new service that turns commuting into a more affordable, efficient experience for everyone. Lyft Carpool launches first in the Bay Area, in partnership with the MTC's 511 Rideshare program, and will expand into new cities over time.

"The unused seats in most drivers' cars represent the biggest untapped source of transit capacity in the Bay Area,” explains Melanie Crotty, MTC's Director of Operations. “We see the partnership with Lyft as a great way to harness both technology and brand identity to put that capacity to work.”

How to make your commute work for you
Lyft Carpool drivers earn up to $10 per trip, and up to $400 a month, all from their daily drive. As a Carpool driver, you'll pick up one rider along your commute, join the carpool lane, and still get to work on time. You choose to drive whenever works for you. There's no commitment. Whether you commute to SF or in cities across the country, sign up to drive and learn more.

Don't drive to work? Ride with Carpool for $4-10
Solo commuters can now get affordable, nonstop rides without needing to drive. To ride, just tell the app when you want to arrive at work. It'll match you with a Lyft Carpool driver who shares your commute route. Prices range from $4-10, and make Carpool a viable option for daily use.

Lyft Carpool seamlessly manages each trip, so both drivers and riders enjoy the ride. Beyond coordinating matching and sending trip reminders, Carpool provides two-way ratings, and secure messaging.

Lyft Carpool represents a revolution in casual carpooling
The commute is the time of day when the most people are on the road, and traffic is at its worst. Within cities, Lyft Line has made sharing your commute affordable, convenient, and efficient. Outside cities, most people still rely on driving their own cars to get to and from work. By solving the longer commute, we can make huge inroads in transforming transportation.

Increases in transportation efficiency could save the estimated $533 billion needed to expand roads to relieve severe congestion in U.S. cities.

Now active in San Francisco, Lyft Carpool will expand as the Lyft Carpool driver community grows. Sign up to drive.

ICYMI: Lyft Keeps Austin Weird at SXSW

“Stay Weird, Stay Safe.”

This motto rang true for thousands of festivalgoers during the two-week South by Southwest festival. We were an official sponsor of SXSW 2016, and in true Lyft fashion, we brought everything from karaoke crews jumping out of neon vans to complimentary juice, kale chips, and of course, rides.

As Austinites and visitors know too well, lines are inevitable at the legendary music-tech-film festival. Enter “Weird Mode” Instead of requesting a ride, users ordered an on-demand party through the Lyft app while waiting in line. The line became the party as Lyft karaoke squads decked out attendees in wigs, costumes and, of course, a microphone to belt out their favorite tune.

While weirdness was abundant, safe rides were the top priority, which is why we partnered with Budweiser to provide free rides at night throughout the festival. The partnership succeeded in providing more than 15,000 safe rides to tired and partied-out festivalgoers.

While pink mustaches and green juices flowed throughout the city, the official SXSW Lyft Lot on 8th and Red River was the more permanent zone for refueling. From charging stations, games, and swag to the always amazing East Side King food truck providing free meals for new users, the Lyft Lot refueled both bellies and batteries.

SXSW may be over, pink wigs put away (at least for a few days) and neon vans parked, but the motto remains the same: stay weird, stay safe, Austin.

SXSW 2016 Recap

SXSW 2016, you definitely helped Austin stay weird.

The giant ferris wheel is gone, the interactive exhibits torn down, and the general SXSW madness has retreated so Austin can finally return to normal. Well, Austin-normal. We were the official ridesharing partner of the event for the second year in a row, which means it was our duty, nay obligation, to help keep Austin weird. If you weren’t able to make it to the festivities in the Lone Star State, here’s what we were up to.

SXSW visitors could access Weird Mode in the Lyft app, which delivered the following at the tap of a button:

  • A birthday celebration (birthday not required)

  • Karaoke on demand, complete with microphone, stage, and gold curtain (crowd not guaranteed)

  • Ninja vs. horde of fuzzy pink gorillas (50% parkour and 50% bad stage fighting)

  • A miscellaneous costume party surprise (think sequined pink jackets, afro wigs, and unicorn masks)

Lyft NYC x Wine Riot

There's never a shortage of fun activities to do in the Big Apple. Earlier this month, thousands of New Yorkers attended an event called Wine Riot — a "fun, non-intimidating place for people to learn about wine" — and Lyft was there to help provide safe rides to attendees. While learning about 250 wines from around the world, guests were able to track which wines they liked in an app, get temporary tattoos, strike a pose in the photo booth, and interact with with other fun exhibitors like us!

As attendees were fueled by a live DJ, they came by our table to spin a prize wheel. From sunglasses to Lyft credits to cuddlestaches, there were plenty of freebies for all.

If you missed our wheel, don’t worry, it will be making more appearances in the coming months!

Lyft Partners with MTC and 511 Rideshare to Deliver New Carpooling Resource

Today, we’re proud to join the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) in announcing our official partnership with the 511 Rideshare program to launch a new carpooling service enabled by the Lyft platform that will relieve traffic congestion for regional commuters traveling on Bay Area highways.

As the transportation planning agency for the Bay Area, MTC has long worked to promote carpooling through systems like 511 Ridematch and informal casual carpool arrangements. But two-thirds of Bay Area commuters still get to work by driving alone, with only 10 percent choosing to carpool. Through this partnership, Lyft and MTC will introduce new tools to flip that equation, making carpooling easy and attractive for mainstream daily use.

“Lyft is proud to partner with MTC and 511 Rideshare to introduce a new carpooling option for commuters,” said Emily Castor, Lyft’s Director of Transportation Policy. “We applaud MTC for embracing new mobility technologies to cut greenhouse gas emissions and improve quality of life in the Bay Area. This is only the beginning of what we can achieve together.”
“MTC has long been committed to carpooling, and we’re pleased to partner with Lyft to develop and promote innovative new ridesharing tools that reduce traffic and create a more sustainable Bay Area,” said MTC Operations Director Melanie Crotty. “The private sector is rising to the challenge of making carpooling work for all, and MTC is pleased to see Lyft join the effort.”

Details of this new carpooling service — which will operate separately from existing Lyft services — will be made public in coming weeks. While traditional Lyft ride types allow drivers to earn extra income, the new carpooling service will allow everyday commuters to offset the costs of driving without changing their routines. Interested drivers can sign up at lyft.com/carpool to be the first to know when it’s available.

MTC is the regional transportation planning, financing and coordinating agency for the nine-county San Francisco Bay Area. 511 Rideshare is MTC’s program to promote carpooling and vanpooling as alternatives to driving alone.

Dating back to our origins in 2007, Lyft’s founders have been motivated by their vision to fill the 80% of empty seats in cars on the road. And thanks to Lyft’s rapid growth since 2012, the robust peer-to-peer ridesharing marketplace we’ve built is now uniquely positioned to make true carpooling work for Bay Area commuters.

Ride with Pride

At Lyft, our mission is to bring people and their communities together through better transportation. Today, we are honored to announce our partnership with SAVE to bring safe, reliable rides to the LGBTQ community, unlocking the freedom for riders to go where they want, when they want.  By encouraging our drivers and passengers to “Ride With Pride” across the country, Lyft stands with SAVE and the LGBTQ community in support of equality for all Americans.

SAVE is a Florida-based organization dedicated to protecting those who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender against discrimination. For over twenty years, SAVE has been a staunch advocate for equal rights for people of all sexual orientations and gender identities, speaking up against hate and intolerance. Lyft is a proud supporter of SAVE and the LGBTQ community and believes nobody should need to worry about their safety when getting around because of who they are or whom they love.

At Lyft, we are committed to making each ride inclusive and diverse – creating a conscientious community where all of our drivers and passengers feel welcome, comfortable, and respected.  We are thrilled to be partnering with an organization like SAVE to help spread the message of inclusion to each corner of the country.
