4 Keys to Turning Your Dream into a Reality

When Fresno resident Brittney first met her husband eleven years ago, she recognized their shared vision almost instantly. “I’ve always wanted to help the hungry, and Tom’s always had a passion for growing and giving food,” Brittney recalls. Since then, they’ve locked in on that dream—starting an operation that grows and donates food to those in need—and have been laser-focused on turning it into a reality.

To fund what they call “the bigger picture,” both Brittney and Tom opened Etsy shops based on their interests. Brittney’s always had a talent for crafting, so she began selling custom party supplies in her popular shop TheSweeetLife. Meanwhile, Tom’s green thumb led him to open TomsTropicals, where people from all over the world purchase his exotic plants.

The dynamic duo’s Etsy earnings pay their bills, but both Brittney and Tom also drive with Lyft to save a little extra. Together, they’re doing what they love while working toward their nonprofit goal. We asked Brittney for her best advice for aspiring entrepreneurs:

  • Do the math. When they decided to open shops on Etsy, Brittney and Tom had financial targets in mind, and figured out exactly what they’d need to do to hit them.
  • Jump in and commit. If you’ve truly got a passion, go all in. “Keep moving toward what makes you excited.”
  • Don’t be afraid of no. “People will tell you no and it’s okay! It might take 100 no’s to get one yes, but it will happen.”
  • Learn from others. “Driving with Lyft allows me to meet so many people, so many potential customers,” Brittney says. Whether it’s chatting with a passenger or brushing up on industry news, she’s always learning.

Rideshare: The Evolution of Car Pooling

Car Pooling in 2015

car-pooling

Benefits

There are a number of benefits – especially in today’s constantly on-the-move society – to carpools.

Today, carpools come in many forms.

From traditional taxi cabs to more technologically sound ridesharing companies and many options in between, today’s consumer has a multitude of options.

Statistics show that around 80% of all seats on the road are empty!

Carpools – in whichever form – alleviate that issue by pairing people and ensuring less cars on the road overall.

This can provide amazing benefits including reducing traffic congestion, reduction of smog from automobiles, and lessening the amount of gasoline used by millions of drivers on the road.

Innovation

There are companies in today’s technologically-savvy landscape that are changing the way we consumers look at traditional carpools.

We will provide further detail regarding specific ridesharing companies and their services in the sections below.

From private rides to carpools and everything in between being offered to regular, everyday people, the ride share era is in full swing.

Share a Ride

If you’re looking for the most eco-friendly and sustainable way to get around these days, both Uber and Lyft have ride pool options when requesting a ride.

Say what?!

Yep.  Uber calls it Uber Pool, while Lyft’s service goes by the name Lyft Line.

The idea of both services is that you can share a ride with another passenger – or maybe even more than one! – headed in the same general direction and share the cost.

Drivers get paid the same amount without added mileage, and passengers get a cut on their bill:  it’s a win-win.

Rideshare: Share a Ride

Rideshare

The ride share craze – at least, its current form – all started with the launch of Uber in 2009.

Uber’s success and potential was pretty evident right off the bat, and their international expansion began in 2011 with Paris.

Then there were 2…

The summer of 2012 brought about Uber’s main competitor in Lyft.

Coming from a background in the carpool business (with more of a focus on longer distances), Lyft expanded exponentially just as Uber had when it launched.

There are now other ridesharing companies out there as well, although most of them are focused on a specific service, such as Wingz is specific to airport rides.

Find a Ride

Finding a ride using either Lyft or Uber is incredibly easy, even for those not as technologically capable as others.

If you have a smartphone, all you need to do to get started is download the app.

Good news!

Your first ride from Lyft, Uber, and Sidecar can be free!  Just use an appropriate promo code to cash in the savings.

After entering a promo code, enter your payment information, and you’re good to go!

As a Driver

As a driver in the ride sharing industry, there are different ways you can make a living.

Whether you want to put the pedal to the metal and drive full-time or just pick up a few rides here and there for supplemental income, both Lyft and Uber have excellent opportunities.

Check out our guide on everything about driving for Lyft!

Lyft now has a program for drivers called Driver Destination, which could change the landscape of carpooling as we know it.

How does it work?

Basically, when a driver is already on their way somewhere, he or she can indicate this via the smartphone app, and can pick up a passenger on their way to their destination.

The driver will earn a little extra cash, and the passenger gets a low rate.

Everyone wins!

Best Rideshare App

rideshare-app

Taxi App Or Carpool App

These various ridesharing services are most often these days utilized via smartphone app.

This method has been found to be much more successful than the traditional method of calling a cab and waiting without knowing when your ride would show up.

Tell me more!

These ridesharing apps are truly on-demand, with most pickup times currently around 5 minutes or so.

Feel Safer

You can feel safer when requesting a ride through a ride share app than when traditionally calling a cab.

You can see a photo of the person you’ll be riding with, as well as a photo of their car and license plate number.

You are able to share this information with others, look at reviews of the driver, and even cancel within 5 minutes if you change your mind without being charged.

Many Ride Sharing Apps

Ride Sharing Apps

As far as ridesharing apps are concerned, there are a few these days.

The largest, most tested, and most user-friendly options are Lyft, Uber, and Sidecar.

Where can I find them?

The relatively new Sidecar now operates in 10 cities; Lyft currently operates in nearly 60 cities nationwide, and Uber offers rides in 200 cities spanning 55 countries.

Top Rideshare USA Cities

rideshare-usa2

Rideshare Los Angeles

Rideshare services are picking up and growing quickly in Los Angeles.

It makes sense for both residents of the city as well as tourists:  it’s big, and it’s crowded.

The city is notorious for poor public transit, and with the different neighborhoods so spread out, finding adequate transportation can sometimes be difficult.

Uber, Lyft, and Sidecar are all currently operating in Los Angeles, with growth reportedly still increasing.

Rideshare Chicago

Ride sharing in Chicago is seeing some of the most prominent growth around the country.

The regional headquarters expects to quadruple its reach by just 2016, creating a lot of jobs in the process.

For a city so reliant on taxis in the past due to traffic, congestion, and poor parking options, people are thrilled to have something new and hassle-free to utilize instead.

Rideshare Seattle

If you’re looking to hail a ride via rideshare in Seattle, you’re in luck.

Both Uber and Lyft are offering record-low pricing for rides throughout the city, and it looks like they’re staying.

Studies have actually shown that these decreased rates cause demand to go up, which means drivers actually end up making more money.

This theory has been tested in many cities, including Chicago and New York City.

It’s a win-win for everyone!

Rideshare San Francisco

This is really where it all began!

Uber, Lyft, Sidecar, and many other ridesharing companies all have their roots in San Francisco’s share-centric culture.

In fact, here more than anywhere else, you can find a variety of ridesharing options tailored to your specific needs.

After completing your application, you are ready for your Welcome Ride.

Tell me more!

The welcome ride is an interview/audition of sorts.

It must take place in a designated Lyft coverage area, and only takes about 40 minutes.

You’ll meet your Mentor, who is one of Lyft’s more experienced drivers.

A car inspection will be completed at this point.  Depending on your city, this will be performed either by your Mentor or a certified mechanic.

Through the app, your Mentor will provide photos of your license, insurance, and registration to Lyft for verification and records.

At this point, you will take your Mentor on a test drive.  This typically takes around 5-10 minutes to complete.

Some areas do not require a welcome ride, so be sure to pay attention to instructions throughout the application process for specifications.

Almost ready…

When these steps are successfully completed, all you have left is to wait for the DMV and background checks to run, and you’re good to go!

Driving Record Check

Your driving record check includes the following criteria:

  • Aged 21 or older, with an active U.S. driver’s license for 1+ years
  • Valid personal auto insurance that meets or exceeds state requirements
  • No more than three moving violations in the past three years (e.g. accidents, traffic light violations)
  • No major violations in the past three years (e.g. driving on a suspended license, reckless driving)
  • No DUIs or other drug-related driving violations in the last seven years
  • No extreme infractions in the last seven years (e.g. hit-and-run, felonies involving a vehicle)

Your vehicle itself must be less than 12 years old, according to the model year.

Background Check

Lyft’s background check is comprised of the following requirements, within the past 7 years:

  • No violent crimes
  • No sexual offenses
  • No theft
  • No property damage
  • No felonies
  • No drug related offenses

In addition, those who are registered on the National Sex Offender Registry and DOJ50-State Sex Offender Registry at the time the background check is conducted are not permitted to become drivers.  This is the case regardless of how long ago the individual was put on that registry.

This is the case regardless of how long ago the individual was put on that registry.

Tips for Preparing for Your Welcome Ride

  1. Clean your car.  Scrub, vacuum, polish, etc.
  2. If you aren’t matched up prior to the ride, finding a mentor is still simple.  Drive into your city’s coverage area between 7am-7pm any day.  The best areas to find mentors are those busy parts of town.
  3. Be patient.  It may take 10-20 minutes to pair you with a mentor.
  4. Plan ahead.  There may be a fee of $20 assessed for the 19-point inspection.  This varies from city to city.  Also, this may take a total of around 45 minutes, so plan accordingly.

Driver Requirements

Lyft driver requirements are pretty straightforward.

Here they are:

  1. You must be 21 years of age or older.
  2. You must drive a 4-door car with at least 5 seatbelts (including driver’s).
  3. You must have been licensed to drive for at least 1 year prior to applying.
  4. You must carry in-state insurance with the driver’s name on the policy.
  5. You must have a valid, in-state driver’s license.
  6. You must have in-state plates with a current registration.  Commercial plates are acceptable as well.
  7. You must have a clean driving record and no disqualifying criminal history.
  8. You must have an iOS or Android smartphone that meets the minimum requirements to run the latest version of the app.
  9. Most importantly!  You must be excited to give welcoming and memorable rides.

Driver Pay

Apply-Lyft-Ride

Average Hourly Guarantees

In select cities, Lyft will guarantee your average hourly pay rate!

How does it work?

First, you must opt-in during each pay period.  You will receive an email with guarantee hours available, and will be able to opt-in through a link contained within the email.

You have until 5 am local time to complete this simple step to become eligible.

These hours can change from week to week, so check your emails!

Also…

You must maintain a weekly 90% acceptance rate to be eligible.  This is calculated by taking the number of unique ride requests you’ve accepted and completed and dividing it by the number of those requests you’ve received.

Lastly, you’ll need to complete 50 hours of rides in driver mode while fulfilling your city’s requirement for completed rides per hour.

Weekly Guarantees

For new Lyft drivers, weekly guarantees are offered in some cities.

To be eligible, you must be approved to drive in an eligible city during the promotion.

You can gain this approval either by following an application link within such an advertisement or by using a referral code for the specific promotion.

Also…

You must get approved as a Lyft driver within 30 days of originally applying.

Lastly, you are required to fulfill the ride, hour, and acceptance rate requirements for that week.

Daily & Weekly Summaries

You will receive a daily summary at the end of each day detailing all of your completed rides within the previous 24-hour period (5 am-5 am).

This summary will detail the length of time, distance, and amount earned for each ride completed.

The weekly summary will be sent via email every Tuesday, which will show your final totals for each day as well as the total deposit for the week.

Pay Schedule

The pay period runs from Monday through Sunday each week.

Direct deposits begin processing each week on Tuesday; they will be received by the end of each week.

In order to receive your payments, you must set up direct deposit with a compatible checking account.

Tax Information

Lyft drivers are classified as independent contractors.  As such, Lyft will provide you with a 1099 form for tax filing purposes.

If you’re a Lyft driver who gives at least 200 rides and generates at least $20,000 in gross ride receipts within the previous year, you will receive a 1099-K.

Drivers who earn a minimum of $600 from non-driving activities such as referral bonuses, mentoring, reimbursements, etc., then you will receive a 1099-MISC.

Regardless of your status in terms of forms, Lyft’s Dashboard provides a yearly summary of a driver’s statistics including the number of rides completed, gross earnings from rides, non-ride earnings, and miles driven when in driver mode.

Prime Time

During peak times when the demand for rides outnumbers drivers available, passengers may pay an additional amount over the regular ride minimum.

This prime time pricing is meant to increase your earnings during those busy times.

Passengers will be notified prior to confirming their requested ride of the added percentage.

Prime time charges will vary based on specific supply and demand.

Drivers will not see anything different when prime time pricing is in effect, although you will see a breakdown of how much of an extra charge was added once the ride ends.

Driver-Prime-time

These prime time charges will also show up in green on your daily summaries.

Lyft provides real-time Heat Maps on your home screen that will show you the busiest areas where you have the best chance to receive prime time.

Driver-Heat-Maps

During some times, Lyft will provide guaranteed prime time pricing.  This may be offered during holidays, promotions, and certain events.

You could be notified of such guaranteed pricing via email or in your dashboard.

Power Driver Bonuses

Power Driver bonuses are bonuses for dependable drivers and are based upon the number of hours driven in a week.

These bonuses are deposited weekly along with the rest of your earnings.

How do I qualify?

It’s pretty simple.

You must maintain a 90% acceptance rate and drive at least 30 hours per week, 10 of which must be during peak hours.

If you drive at least 30 hours per week, you qualify for a 10% power driver bonus.

If you go above and beyond and drive at least 50 hours per week, your bonus spikes to 20%.

Good news!

There is no limit to the bonus, so you can earn as much as you want; the percentage is based on your total earnings.  So go for it!

Driving for Lyft

drive-for-lyft

Driving for Lyft is easy!

Even the less tech-savvy among us can do it with ease.

How it Works:

  1. Open up the app and turn on driver mode.
  2. Accept a ride request.
  3. Pick up your passenger and confirm your arrival.
  4. Upon ride completion, the app processes payment through the passenger’s saved method.
  5. You are able to rate passengers with 1-5 stars (they can rate you as a driver also).  You’ll never be matched again with a passenger you rate 3 stars or below.

Insurance Coverage

Lyft drivers are covered with some pretty great insurance options, including the following:

Commercial Auto Liability – $1,000,000 limit for bodily injury and/or property damage or passenger and/or third parties.

Contingent Comprehensive & Collision – $2,500 deductible & $50,000 maximum applied to drivers who purchase this type of coverage on their personal policy.

Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist – $1,000,000 limit covering bodily injury of drivers and/or passengers and/or third parties for damages caused by an uninsured or underinsured motorist who is at fault.

These policies are applied from the time a driver accepts a ride until the ride has ended within the app.

Also…

Contingent Liability – Up to $50,000 per person/$100,000 per accident/$25,000 property damage.  Covers driver liability for bodily injury and/or property damage of passengers and/or third parties.

This coverage applies from when the driver flips into driver mode until the driver accepts a ride request.

Good to know!

If you already carry either commercial insurance or a personal policy specifically for ridesharing, then these Lyft policies will be in excess of your own insurance.

Lyft x Ford Warriors in Pink: #MoreGoodDays

For more than 20 years, Ford Motor Company has worked to advance the conversation around breast cancer – inspiring the next generation of warriors in the fight, while continuing to fuel the spirit of those living with the disease. To date, Ford has contributed more than $128 million to the cause, and we’re excited to partner with them to provide free Lyft rides to breast cancer patients going to and from treatment in 17 key cities across the country.

For those living with breast cancer, dependable transportation to and from treatment is often a challenge; some are not allowed to drive themselves (doctor’s orders), and taking public transportation may not be an option. We’re asking our community to help alleviate this pain point and it’s easy to get involved — all you have to do is share what brightens your day with us on Twitter, Instagram, or Facebook, and include #MoreGoodDays. For each note you share, Ford Warriors in Pink® will donate a Lyft ride to someone undergoing treatment for breast cancer until we reach our goal of 10,000.

“Most breast cancer patients categorize their days by ‘good days’ and ‘bad days,’” said Tracy Magee, Ford Warriors in Pink brand manager. “While many people want to help, most are unsure of the best way to show their support. We want to change this.”

We're working with breast cancer treatment centers to provide these free rides June through October in select cities across the US. These Lyft rides are just one part of Warrior in Pink’s efforts to give these patients better days, and we’re happy to, with the help of our incredible community, do our part.

“At the heart of the project are partnerships with Meal Train and Lyft to provide support services and resources that benefit those breast cancer and help make their day-to-day life easier,” said Ford in a press release.

Over the coming weeks, keep an eye on the #MoreGoodDays page to see the inspiring photos and tips that come in, and to learn more about Ford Warriors in Pink.

3 Tips for Chasing Your Dreams, from a Business Owner and Lyft Driver

This Internet Week, we’ll be hearing stories from corporate professionals and startup trailblazers alike as they celebrate the impact of technology on business. But don’t fret if you can’t hop a plane to New York’s conference—your daily dose of inspiration just might be sitting in the car next to you.

Meet Garrett Lamb, San Francisco Lyft driver, entrepreneur, and CEO of Garrett’s Granola. Garrett hasn’t always been a small business owner. In fact, up until the launch of his granola company last year, he’d held jobs as a child care director, life coach, and relationship advisor. “I’ve always had a passion for making food for friends, and a dream of owning my own business. I decided it was time to put two and two together.”

Garrett drives with Lyft to help fund his business, but he also gets another benefit from driving: meeting customers. Armed with free samples and great conversation, Garrett’s passengers often call him afterward to make a purchase. Occasionally, they’ll even spread the word to their employer, who orders the granola for the office. Nearly all of Garrett’s sales have come from connections he’s made through Lyft driving.

Dreaming of starting your own business venture? Here are Garrett’s best tips:

  • Dive in. Garrett had no background in business when he first started, but he didn’t let that stop him from pursuing his dreams. “My philosophy is just do it. You’ll make mistakes, but if you don’t try, it’ll never happen.”
  • Be a sponge. Garrett views every ride as a chance to learn from someone. Listen to other’s experiences and appreciate their advice.
  • People are everything. “It’s all about the relationships you establish,” he says. “If someone has a choice of five different granolas for their office, but they’ve met me, they’ll take a chance on mine instead of the others.” Friendships and face-to-face contact are invaluable, Garrett says.

Here’s to all the Lyfters following their dreams.
